“How did it go?” Cadence greeted him the second he returned to their suite while preoccupying herself with the takeout he brought back from San Gabriel. There was nothing in the Downtown area that satisfied her craving for pan-fried pork buns.

“It was okay. I have a lot of competition,” Matt replied. There was something off about this listing, so he broached the topic carefully. “Jack speculated that he’d probably get more interest if the lot was bigger.”

“What does he expect?” Cadence released a small, disbelieving laugh, gesticulating with a half-eaten bun in her hand. “That you could magically extend his property line?”

It wasn’t making sense to Cadence because she had no idea. The division in the Lim family ran deeper than Matt thought. “It doesn’t matter. Jack made it clear that he preferred a local broker.”

“Let me know if you think I can help,” she offered sweetly. “I can try to play the neighbor card if needed.”

How many times had Cadence helped him out, setting the ball up for Matt to spike? “What did I do to deserve you?”

“It’d be rude not to help my food supplier,” she said, laughing off his earnest question. “Shit.” Cadence stuffed her mouth with the last bite of her pork bun. “I have to get ready. Percy Ma waits for no one. I’ll drive.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, you should rest.” Cadence rubbed Matt’s shoulder and gave him a peck on the cheek. “You’re looking a little drained from this morning.”

Matt looked down at the counter, withholding the questions that still filled his mind. It wouldn’t be smart to bring up a sensitive topic with Cadence, distracting both of them before their meeting with Percy Ma. Blowing this meeting was not an option. Matt didn’t know the entire Best Eastern situation himself, and the last thing he wanted to do was exacerbate the rift between Cadence and her family.

Cadence misread Matt’s subdued expression. “Hey. Let’s go out tonight and do something fun. Take your mind off work.”

Matt caught the twinkle in her eyes, the excitement in her voice. It occurred to him that this would be the first time going out together, for no other reason than to enjoy each other’s company. A real date. “Wanna go out for dinner? Somewhere nice?”

“Oh! Okay,” she said brightly. Matt’s heart ballooned at the sight of Cadence’s unguarded smile. “I guess I’ll dress up for the meeting.” She scurried into her room to change.

“Percy better not get any wrong ideas,” Matt said as he searched his phone for a restaurant.

“As if,” she shouted from her room. “I only brought work clothes with me.”

While Cadence stepped away to change, Matt sent a quick email to Kevin.

Subject: FW: Best Eastern

Kev,

See the email below from Sadie. Can you look into the sales history on this property for me and send it ASAP? Cadence and I are swamped, so anything you can find would be helpful. I’ll owe you one.
